Hello NFC Clients and Friends,
Have you heard of Amazon? Do you use Amazon Prime to purchase goods and services? Well, like reportedly 200 million others, I certainly do. I used it last night (Prime Video) to watch my Chicago Bears epic 25 point 4th quarter comeback in the NFC Wild Card playoff game to defeat their arch rival Green Bay Packers at Soldier FIeld! In the depressing first half of that same game, I also used Amazon Prime to buy yet another financial fitness related book (that I already own!) to give to a fellow educator. Like most of us in America, I am a walking anecdote; a cog in the engine of the world’s most powerful, consumer driven economy. Moreover, I am paying Jeff Bezos $139/year for the privilege of doing so through my phone, TV, and laptop. Except this year.

Amazon Prime participants, I have an easy win for you. You can take 10 minutes to significantly improve your financial fitness. While waiting for a DiGiornio pizza to cook, I applied for the Prime Visa card, earning a $250 Amazon credit,1 and 5% cash back on every Amazon Prime purchase going forward! The card has a $0 annual fee for Amazon Prime members. The benefits of the card are quite significant, and ongoing. I listed only 5 below.2 Other benefits discussed here: “I got the Prime Visa for the Bonus; Here’s how much it saved me since.” I do not endorse, nor am I paid in any way by Amazon. In fact, consider this a trigger warning should you dare click on the link below* to view the obscene amount of wealth this franchise generates for Jeff Bezos personally relative to other very large numbers in our economy. My AP Macroeconomics and Personal Finance students certainly found this perspective-generating exercise fascinating.
Regardless of how I feel about Amazon, consumption in general, or the fact that Mr. Bezos makes more money in the time it takes him to blow his nose than I did in my 31 year teaching career,* I refuse to turn down “free” money and benefits, especially for using a service for which I am already paying! Turns out that “paying” attention can actually save me money.
Please do not get it twisted. You cannot “save” money by spending it! But you can spend less money on things you are already buying anyway.
This is true even for Packers fans!
On behalf of those of us who happen to be "paying" attention to other things in life, I am very grateful for the NFC client who shared this savings opportunity with me. So I am sharing it with you.
The power of community is real. Thanks for being part of this one.
Yours in Financial Fitness,

It appears that the $250 sign up bonus has expired : (. Now you only get $150. Still worth it in my opinion provided you have a healthy relationship with credit cards. Namely, you have set up your Auto Pay on all cards to pay your balance off on time and in full EVERY month. No exceptions.
